We want to support in amplifying the voices of black creators in the comic community. As you may have noticed, we didn't have an episode this week. That's because we both feel strongly about supporting the men and women fighting for equality in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. For that reason, we want to support in amplifying the voices of black artists, writers, and creators in the comic community. There are too many great works to count, but we wanted to share a few of our favorites that we think you should check out, too.
Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet (W: Ta-Nehisi Coates, A: Chris Sprouse/Brian Selfreeze; Marvel Comics) "When a superhuman terrorist group sparks an uprising, Wakanda will be thrown into turmoil! A group of heroes, including Storm and Luke Cage, come together to aid T’Challa, but can Wakanda’s king survive this tidal wave of change?" Far Sector (W: N.K. Jemisin, A: Jamal Campbell; DC Comics) "For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent. But that’s all about to change in this new maxi-series that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!" Vampirella Vol. 5 (W: Christopher Priest, A: Giovanni Timpano; Dynamite Entertainment) "For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent. But that’s all about to change in this new maxi-series that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!" Static (And the other excellent books from Milestone Media & DC Comics) Founded in 1993, Milestone Media (best known for Milestone Comics) was founded by a coalition of African-American artists and writers, consisting of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. Published and distributed by DC Comics, they created titles like Icon, Hardware, and Static - which was later featured in the classic animated series, Static Shock. African-American Classics: Graphic Classics Volume 22 (Various Authors/Artists; Eureka Productions) "African-American Classics presents great stories and poems from America's earliest Black writers, illustrated by contemporary African-American artists. Featured are "Two Americans" by Florence Lewis Bentley, "The Goophered Grapevine" by Charles W. Chesnutt, "Becky" by Jean Toomer, two short plays by Zora Neale Hurston, and six more tales of humor and tragedy. Also featured are eleven poems, including Langston Hughes' "Danse Africaine" and "The Negro", plus Paul Laurence Dunbar's "Sympathy" ('I know why the caged bird sings...')"
