Weekly Pull Highlights: October 16, 2019
Amazing Mary Jane #1 "Alright, this book starts you not only in medias res, but fully expects you to dive in both feet first without a second thought and I... don't hate it? Leah Williams cares not about your expectations, wants, or desires. She wants to build you a giant villain-filled plot set on a Hollywood set, and I think I'm really here for it. But the best part about the whole book is the AMAZING relationship (see what I did there?) she sets up between MJ & Peter. They're so cute it'll give you cavities... in a good way." Valkyrie #4 "A book about a Norse demi-goddess has more varied mythos and religious development than anything else I've read lately. I love that Jason Aaron isn't afraid to look at the absolute weirdness that is the Marvel universe and how strange it is that we have a baker's dozen different mythologies all co-existing at once. And somehow, he manages to make them all work together really, really well. It completely makes sense. Also, he's officially introduced a flying, talking horse with a Cockney accent, and let me tell you, that man can write sentient animal pets like NO ONE ELSE. I think he really gets me, you guys." Fearless #4 "The final installment of the super cute, super kitsch collection all about the women that make up the Marvel universe - both the fictional characters in the books, but the writers and artists outside the books, too! This final summary was pretty adorable, and continues to show off what an ABSOLUTE BADASS Storm is; she really doesn't get enough credit as a goddess. It's also nice to see a short featuring Namora, who I feel doesn't get nearly enough love since her compatriot Namor is such an absolute d-bag all the time (including in this short - surprise, surprise). The whole thing wraps up with a history lesson of some of Marvel's very first women contributors, and an incredibly sentimental panel that will hit you right in the feels. Grab a tissue, fam - you're gonna need it." Martian Manhunter #9 "Admittedly, I've been pretty quiet on this title since I discussed it during it's initial title drop, but I wanted to share that this book has really made some very cool leaps and bounds in the story's progression. It's been really interesting watching this character get so much development, and to not only get backstory on him, but some proper build of his partner. I was really concerned at the start of this series that it was going to drastically change the perspective on J'onn J'onzz (making him a dirty cop and overall kind of shady dude) but they really 180'ed on that line of thought, and they've done a cool job making him feel like he THINKS he's a bad dude, when he's always just tried to do what's right by his family. It feels like the arc is starting to aim toward it's conclusion, but if you're looking for a cool book, this is worth going back and picking up the earlier issues." Red Sonja & Vampirella Meet Betty & Veronica #6 "Another wrap-up issue, but this one was admittedly less climactic than I was expecting. They did a great job developing all the drama in the first several issues, just to fall a wee bit flat on the ending. Students go to jail, bad guys disappear before the cops can get them in cuffs, and Vampirella is planning a trip homeward-bound. But it leaves us with a cliffhanger and everything happens incredibly fast, leaving me personally feeling mildly unsatisfied. There is a nod to a potential second run in the next few months, so hopefully questions will be answered and we won't be left entirely without closure moving forward."
