I mean, I know we mentioned this last time, but like, why are there so many vampires right now? It's like every new round of books includes at least one vampire-focused title! At least this week has a ton of options for folks who love vampires, folks who don't! Just keeps getting better and better.
[Spoiler-free, friends!]
After much anticipation, the new season of The Umbrella Academy has come to Netflix and it is EXCELLENT. In a very un-spoilery fashion, we give you a brief reminder of what went down in season one and share our favorite parts of the new season. And yes, we can confirm, the hype train is real - season two is WAY better than the first. The comic world is coming back slowly but surely.Since the mass comic halt that started in March thanks to COVID-19, things have been a little topsy-turvy when it comes to comic titles. This week, we only had a handful of new books to mention, so we figured we'd wrap it up quickly for you here instead. Oh, and don't forget to keep an ear out for our new REEL EXTRA episode on Umbrella Academy (Season 2) coming this Wednesday!
Honorable Mention Highlights: August 12, 2020
Big Girls #1 The acclaimed artist of Trees has taken full creative control of a brand new title with very... large... ambitions. The story starts all about one very, VERY big girl and her role in keeping the survivors of the apocalypse safe. It's kitchy, a little weird, and maybe a little unsettling to be honest. I think it has definite potential, but I'm curious to see what the message is going to be all about. At this point, I haven't really figured out what Jason's trying to say. Seven Secrets #1 Oh man, this book drops you right in the middle of the thicket and I LOVE when that happens. A world full of conspiracy, intrigue, love, romance, family - it's like James Bond meets National Treasure meets the Mummy movies from the 90's, and I am so here for it. Taylor has done an impeccable job of making me want to know more about everything, from the world to the secrets to our narrator that we haven't even met yet. This is definitely a title to pick up. Once you see CGI vampire eyes, you're never the same.

Look at all these re-visited IPs! From video games, to classic films, to a new title in an existing comic line, we help guide you through these new books and give some insight into the worlds they come from. Maybe instead of all these movie reboots, we can just have brand new comics instead? Neo-Western without the depression spiral.
Our first stand-alone edition of 'Graphic Novelties,' where we discuss graphic novels, both new and old, that we think you should know about. This week, we're discussing the new Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips book, 'PULP,' and all it's neo-western glory. A book Ed didn't even really want to make (thanks for prodding him, Sean!), this is an excellent tale with beautiful art. Time to add something a little heftier to your comic buy!
NO MORE ELVES IN ACTION MOVIES!
[Very mild SPOILERS!]
Admittedly, this week was kind of light on new titles and books we thought you needed to know about, so we decided to give our thoughts on the new Netflix Original movie adaptation of Greg Rucka's "The Old Guard." A good flick with great action (Charlize, you're a goddess), we cover the nuanced needs of bringing a comic to the big screen and the dangers that come with giving fans what they think they want. |
