Short, sweet, and to the point!
Weekly Pull Highlights: June 17, 2020
We took a couple weeks off for some personal (and some political) reasons, but we are BACK and coming at you with a relatively short, but certainly to the point, episode. With a handful of great new number ones, and a surprising ability to stay on topic, we hope this Cover B is refreshing without weighing you down, like when you eat a banana instead of nachos. You're welcome. It was a quiet, but quite Batman-tastic, week!As you can tell, we unfortunately don't have an episode for you this week. Partially because of a very small pull from our local comic shop, and partially because this week was incredibly busy. Stay tuned, though - we'll be back next week! In the meantime, here's our picks for this week - let us know what you think in the comments! Honorable Mention Highlights: June 10, 2020
Joker 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular A must read for Joker fans. DC really let their writers and artists flex in this one, and it gets really twisted FAST. Also, there's a joke about the Batman Damned controversy, so that's always fun. Batman: The Adventures Continue #1 Batman: The Animated Series is a hard act to follow, considering it's cult-following status and incredible influence on the IP as a whole. While it's certainly still early and was enjoyable in its own right, the book hasn't quite shown it has legs just yet, with a relatively ho-hum plot line that felt more about character name dropping than properly building off it's predecessor. Here's to hoping issue two starts gain a little more traction. Batman Secret Files #3 This particular edition of Secret Files focuses on the group of assassins that recently were unleashed on Batman by the Designer. It's a nice look at the challenges Batman faces, since sometimes he can seem like a character who just can't be stopped by anything. Some pretty decent fight sequences, too! Adventureman #1 I love a book that drops you into the middle of the drama, and this book definitely does that. First you're hit with a pulpy, old-school styled hero team, then you're in modern day with a beautifully developed lead character that has nothing to do with the previous half of the book... or so we think. Beautiful art, a solid definition of the world, I am DEFINITELY here for more. We want to support in amplifying the voices of black creators in the comic community. As you may have noticed, we didn't have an episode this week. That's because we both feel strongly about supporting the men and women fighting for equality in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. For that reason, we want to support in amplifying the voices of black artists, writers, and creators in the comic community. There are too many great works to count, but we wanted to share a few of our favorites that we think you should check out, too.
Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet (W: Ta-Nehisi Coates, A: Chris Sprouse/Brian Selfreeze; Marvel Comics) "When a superhuman terrorist group sparks an uprising, Wakanda will be thrown into turmoil! A group of heroes, including Storm and Luke Cage, come together to aid T’Challa, but can Wakanda’s king survive this tidal wave of change?" Far Sector (W: N.K. Jemisin, A: Jamal Campbell; DC Comics) "For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent. But that’s all about to change in this new maxi-series that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!" Vampirella Vol. 5 (W: Christopher Priest, A: Giovanni Timpano; Dynamite Entertainment) "For the past six months, newly chosen Green Lantern Sojourner “Jo” Mullein has been protecting the City Enduring, a massive metropolis of 20 billion people. The city has maintained peace for over 500 years by stripping its citizens of their ability to feel. As a result, violent crime is virtually unheard of, and murder is nonexistent. But that’s all about to change in this new maxi-series that gives a DC Young Animal spin to the legacy of the Green Lanterns!" Static (And the other excellent books from Milestone Media & DC Comics) Founded in 1993, Milestone Media (best known for Milestone Comics) was founded by a coalition of African-American artists and writers, consisting of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. Published and distributed by DC Comics, they created titles like Icon, Hardware, and Static - which was later featured in the classic animated series, Static Shock. African-American Classics: Graphic Classics Volume 22 (Various Authors/Artists; Eureka Productions) "African-American Classics presents great stories and poems from America's earliest Black writers, illustrated by contemporary African-American artists. Featured are "Two Americans" by Florence Lewis Bentley, "The Goophered Grapevine" by Charles W. Chesnutt, "Becky" by Jean Toomer, two short plays by Zora Neale Hurston, and six more tales of humor and tragedy. Also featured are eleven poems, including Langston Hughes' "Danse Africaine" and "The Negro", plus Paul Laurence Dunbar's "Sympathy" ('I know why the caged bird sings...')" |
