Look, sometimes we DO get rendered speechless...What a strange week for comics, you guys. Some interesting new titles, but also some just... strange stuff. But hey, if you've been looking for a way to break into Firefly, that happened! So... good?
Honorable Mention Highlights: January 27, 2021
Dead End Kids #1 Get ready for some feels, fam. We're finally far enough away from 9/11 that we can start reading stories, not of the tragedy itself, but of the aftermath left behind. Following three teens all affected by the consequences of the awful event in very different ways, we see something fascinating... What happens when life keeps moving, and crazy stuff keeps going down entirely unrelated to this originally life-altering experience? I'm incredibly excited about this book because it really feels like a very new, very necessary story about people just trying to keep on going. The Eighth Immortal #1 I want to like this book, I really truly do. It's got really cool somewhat manga-esque art and an interesting use of color. The premise is right in line with the types of stories I enjoy, being all about a race of immortals who are barred from ever reproducing because there can only ever be 7 of them. Lots of myth, lots of prophecy and the like. And yet, it's hard getting past the elephant in this book that is how ABSOLUTELY HORNY THIS BOOK IS. I am by no means a prude, but goddamn, there is sex on like every third page of this book. Wowsers. Stake #1 "but Chris, you said you were sick of Vampires!" I know, okay, look.... This book was cool, it had interesting art and enough uniqueness in it's world building to stand apart. It was basically "what if Faith from Buffy became a Twitch streamer?" I liked it, okay. There. I liked a Vampire book. Firefly #25 So, now, I know it seems weird to have a mid-series book in here, but I think this is a GREAT jumping on point for folks who love Firefly and want more of it. We just finished the Serenity crew (and friends and associates) bailing on the fight and making a life for themselves in Haven... Except, years later, looks like all of THAT has gone sideways. New characters, the loss of old ones, and KayLee taking on the captain's mantle, I am MORE than excited to see what the sam-heck happened during that flash-forward we didn't get to see!

From social media managers losing their souls, to coping with loneliness and depression, we're getting deep, but also awesome, with new indie titles this week. Hey, they can't all be rainbows, right? I have some questions about that lightsaber usage...

We're back from break and boy were there some great titles this week! Whether you're looking for something adorable, something dark, or something regal, there are all sorts of options. There's even something for folks looking for a comic about ninja nuns fighting the Flying Spaghetti Monster! Comics are weird, y'all. Happy New Year! All I want for Christmas is an excellent horror story.Honorable Mention Highlights: November 4, 2020
Wolverine: Black, White & Blood #1 Now, before you say anything, YES, this is in fact another collection of stories about the same guy that we've all read way to many stories about already. No, there isn't anything particularly new about the book or the stories. BUT, the art is fantastic and definitely deserves heaps of praise. If you're a fan of the snikting savage, this is definitely worth the buy. Heavy Metal Elements: Savage Circus #1 This book has so much potential... we just didn't really get to the meat of anything in this first issue. Beasts, robberies, a sleepy town with a deputy who's bad at his job - you've set up an excellent horror tale that I'd be more invested in if anything actually... happened. Also, there were some things that could have used more clarity in the middle (raise your hand if you totally didn't realize the thieves & the circus WEREN'T the same people... my bad). But still, this book even takes place at Christmas, and GOD do we love a good holiday horror tale. Tales of the Dark Multiverse: Batman: Hush #1 At this point, we've read our fair share of these "cannon but not really" Batman stories, but this one was quite fun. There's a special place in my heart whenever Batman gets depicted as an anti-hero - not particularly good (he's killing quite a few folks here), but he's still going after an inherently bad guy. Not complaining one bit. Origins #1 This book looks beautiful, and has excellent opportunities for world building and establishing an extensive lore. The only thing is... no idea what this is even about yet. Sometimes, breadcrumbs aren't quite enough to follow the story, especially when they don't use the same bread the whole time. Heavy Metal Elements: Dark Wing #1 It's a good old fashion sci-fi story, set in a distant part of space, with humans struggling to survive and desperately hunting resources to restart the population. There's a guy with an "I have to make tough choices" attitude, not afraid to fight against the status quo and push back against the higher ranks. It's all pretty standard fair, except for the name of this book, which kept me harkening back to a certain crimefighting duck. I'm just saying. Cover B's back... tell a friend!

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming! We had to take a couple weeks off thanks to a big move (new place is shaping up great though!), but now we're back and ready to read with some very exciting new titles. She-Hulk died, the X-Men are bringing weird Marvel organizations back from the dead... it's a lot. Let's get into it! You name it, we read it. Seriously.

What a heckin' beefy week for comics! A ton of excellent new indie titles, all from very different genres - you want horror, we've got horror! You want sci-fi or fantasy? We've got you covered. You want romantic drama, we've got that, too. This week really had it all! Red Hood doesn't get no respect!

WOW are there some intense plot points this week! From there finally being actually three Jokers, to the surprise throwback in the Daredevil Annual, there's no limit on the comic craziness this episode. OH, and aliens attack Red Sonja... we're not kidding. (Want to avoid Three Jokers #1 spoilers? Skip to 25:10!) The comic world is coming back slowly but surely.Since the mass comic halt that started in March thanks to COVID-19, things have been a little topsy-turvy when it comes to comic titles. This week, we only had a handful of new books to mention, so we figured we'd wrap it up quickly for you here instead. Oh, and don't forget to keep an ear out for our new REEL EXTRA episode on Umbrella Academy (Season 2) coming this Wednesday!
Honorable Mention Highlights: August 12, 2020
Big Girls #1 The acclaimed artist of Trees has taken full creative control of a brand new title with very... large... ambitions. The story starts all about one very, VERY big girl and her role in keeping the survivors of the apocalypse safe. It's kitchy, a little weird, and maybe a little unsettling to be honest. I think it has definite potential, but I'm curious to see what the message is going to be all about. At this point, I haven't really figured out what Jason's trying to say. Seven Secrets #1 Oh man, this book drops you right in the middle of the thicket and I LOVE when that happens. A world full of conspiracy, intrigue, love, romance, family - it's like James Bond meets National Treasure meets the Mummy movies from the 90's, and I am so here for it. Taylor has done an impeccable job of making me want to know more about everything, from the world to the secrets to our narrator that we haven't even met yet. This is definitely a title to pick up. Things are about to get real witchy in Willow.
Weekly Pull Highlights: July 8, 2020
After a week with no Marvel or DC, we come roaring back with three great books! Dan Slott kicks off the Fantastic Four's side of the Empyre story, DCeased comes back to make us all cry (again), and the Whedonverse grows a little more with a brand new title dedicated to Willow. It's like we never left (but don't lie, you missed us)! Short, sweet, and to the point!

We took a couple weeks off for some personal (and some political) reasons, but we are BACK and coming at you with a relatively short, but certainly to the point, episode. With a handful of great new number ones, and a surprising ability to stay on topic, we hope this Cover B is refreshing without weighing you down, like when you eat a banana instead of nachos. You're welcome. |
